Diamond Liners Customer Comes to the Aid of San Francisco Transit System

“Save money…. And possibly your life!” the KRON Channel 4 News correspondent announces, opening the news piece about how BART, the rail service that connects San Francisco with the East Bay, elected to replace their outdated, flammable and high maintenance carpeting with sprayed on flooring. BART consulted with independent coatings specialist Kyle Flanagan, who then contacted Canadian coatings professional Quantum Technical Services, Ltd. The other integral service provider for the BART project was Diamond Liners client Innovating Painting and Waterproofing, Inc.

The two companies were hired by BART to complete the job after the first solution (from another company), a glue-applied rubberized sheet system was taking just far too long to install. The new sprayed on solution would take approximately 1 day per train car floor versus 2 weeks per floor with the initial solution. BART was sold instantly on the new coatings solution.

After a 1979 electrical fire on another San Francisco train system, which claimed the life of a firefighters, the city put new guidelines in place regarding flammable materials in public transit systems. The new sprayed on flooring, as Coatings Pro magazine noted, “Provides excellent resistance to flame spread and smoke development.” It also prevents the release of pollutants and is significantly easier to clean and maintain; an important feature in the commuter trains with high amounts of foot traffic and wear and tear.

Please view the video above and also see the article in the March 2008 of Coatings Pro magazine for more details on how the BART rail service saved money and potentially rider lives by electing to implement sprayed on flooring from Diamond Liners’ client Innovative Painting & Waterproofing, Inc.
